Excuse me for being backward, but let me share my beauty routine…in reverse order. The bulk of my beauty routine (a.k.a., the part that takes FOREVER) is my skin care regimen.
Yeah, I may be too lazy to pull everything off before bed, but in the A.M., I may as well be naked if I haven’t done my full morning skin care routine. Because I’m healing a bad breakout and am between skin care products, I thought I’d share my concise collection of everyday makeup first. Two products mentioned are multipurpose and are major space- and time-savers (wibbly-wobbly-time-wimey, anyone?), and most of products actually provide health benefits for my skin! If you’re ready to be inspired, keep reading!
I didn’t know that I needed this, but after using it, I for sure know that I need the glow this gives me every day! It’s not glittery or sparkly; it’s a natural pearlescent sheen that also lends to some semblance of dewiness without actual dew.
And, oh, the ingredients! It’s 94 percent natural, 21 percent organic, and does more for my skin over time than a regular highlighting liquid or dewy primer. It doesn’t change the shade of my skin, has calmed my skin during the day, and can be used alone for a subtle, sheer glow to bring out natural radiance. Plus, One Over One customer service is top-notch, and their mantra of simplicity and natural beauty is inspiring.
Next is an equalizing, sanity-providing force in my makeup lineup. I mean, all of Glossier’s Phase 2 products are, and I’ve been using this baby since it was part of Phase 1! The Perfecting Skin Tint’s goal isn’t so much about coverage as it is evening out skin tone. With this really bad reactive breakout of late, I needed a quick and simple way to physically “wish away” the scarring while all the skin care underneath did the dirty work. Spot concealing all around my face was time-consuming and never resulted in an even look.
On top of the Base Glow, I look like a fallen angel that just so happened to have a bad case of contact dermatitis on the way to planet earth’s welcome desk. The shade range isn’t super wide, but all shades are forgiving and can suit the majority of skin tones, so there’s a 99 percent chance that you will find your shade.
I ended my search for the perfect under eye concealer when I got Onomie’s BCE in Zhao several of years ago. The fact is that it’s perfect for those of us with those dark shadows of sleeplessness, restlessness, allergic stress, and poor genetic dispositions. My perfect shade, Zhao, is a “tan neutral,” which is the most accurate way to describe my skin. This doesn’t crease or dry out to a powdery mess under my sensitive peepers, either.
Now, remember how I mentioned that some products mentioned are actually good for my skin? The BCE is one of them with a clinically-backed formula, so it’s a loving marriage of both makeup and skin care. With time, I’ve seen improvement in my under eye area.
I can’t be bothered to elegantly contour, carving out cheekbones and amplifying whatever it is that highlighter is supposed to amplify. I also have shaky hands and can’t safely apply eyeliner without an impending eye injury. So, that’s where another One Over One hero product comes in (but who am I kidding? All their products are stars)! This Duotone palette has one dark brown shade and one sheer cream-colored shade for embellishing the subtle contours of my face within seconds and just a few swipes.
I also use a smudge brush (optional) to apply the dark brown shade under the outer corner of my bottom lash line for some monochromatic definition. Think light and dark, the sun and the shade…all things found in nature, now available for the natural canvas of your face. This sheer and buildable duo has made my life so much easier and I look forward to using it daily!
The first product that has ever touched my brows and the only product I use for my brows (because are you kidding? I can’t draw brow hairs) is Boy Brow! I say that triumphantly because yes, the hype is real. It’s effortless in that it takes seconds to apply. And, if you’re not one for color, there’s a clear option, too. I comb this through my brows and enjoy my natural brows’ believable bushiness throughout the day.
Two things that I wish: that it had more skin-healthy ingredients and that it contained a bit more product for the price. I’m looking at a couple of green alternatives right now (for science), but the more I look, the less I gripe about my Boy Brow because, yes, it is that good.
This mutifunctional lip and cheek stick is my newest addition and obsession! From Make Beauty and in collaboration with one of my favorite content creators, Madelynn De La Rosa. I can see her love for French cinema in Bisou Bisou. I had been aimlessly searching for this ruddy, warm red color for ages now, as well as for a multi stick that didn’t have antagonizing ingredients like coconut oil. As soon as Madelynn announced this collaboration, I knew I had to invest in it.
I can happily say it’s pigmented enough for wear on both my cheeks and my already-pigmented lips! This shade is vintage romance in a minimally-appeasing stick. Plus, in addition to being an artistically-inclined company, Make Beauty donates a portion of every sale to the non-profit We See Beauty Foundation to support women-led businesses in at-need communities. I am in love with this product, this company, and would sell all my socks (yep, all three and a half pairs) to repurchase this.
And that’s it! I love my functional, simplified, intentional makeup lineup that comprises the second part of my beauty routine. For the first part, you may need a coffee or two, so stay tuned.
